How to Dress Like a Top Model
March 2, 2010 in Fashion, Modeling & Casting Tips by Kay Silva
If you’re the kind of person who always fancied getting all styled up like a model, then you’re in luck. Be as fabulous as the models that you see on TV, runways and in magazines. Follow these tips to dress like them, plus adding your own personal touch of style! Unleash the inner fashionista in you.
Steps:
1. What’s your inspiration? OK- here’s the thing: you don’t want to be exactly like one certain model, but you can use her as an inspiration and style plate for your own wardrobe. It can be tricky to find just one model to follow; you may love the things she wears in her first spread, but hate the stuff she wears in the second. If that is the case, you can adopt several similar-style role models, and borrow your favorite fashion statements from each.
In addition, you NEVER want to copy EVERYTHING a certain model does. She is simply there for inspiration. You can also surf the web, browse through magazines and take note of what you think works for you. Being a model isn’t always about following the trends, it’s about showing off what YOU think looks good, and hopefully impressing others to follow you, hence, making you the trend setter.
2. Answer a very simple question: “Do you have extra money or are you broke?”
Yes, it’s a strange question to ask, but here’s why:
a. If you have the means, then buy every type of fashion magazines on stand (like Vogue, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, etc). See something you like? Then buy it! The magazine will mention to the smallest detail the stuff that the model is wearing. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different mixed-model looks. Be bold and creative.
b. If you are scarce with money, follow the example of animals that are too lazy to fight others: camouflage. Open same fashion magazines as above (borrow them, browse them in the shop) and watch what your adopted model is wearing. Note the colors and the combination. Then go to a second hand shop or to an outlet shop and buy something cheap that closely resembles what you just saw on the magazine. Unless people handle it and check labels and as long as you treat the garment with care, none will be the wiser about your deceptive tactics. Additionally, thrift shops and consignment stores open up a whole new world in the way of unique and fresh style that can be fashionable and totally yours. Some magazines and fashion sites also offer cheaper/reasonable look-alikes. Get working and look for these best buys!

3. Be Healthy! Looking great will help everyone notice your model clothing. Remember, clothes can on enhance what you already have. You don’t need to be a size zero or negative two or whatever to look beautiful. Simply take care of you, hit the gym two or three times a week. Eat healthier, Take Care of Your Skin and Hair. When you feel great, you’ll definitely look great too.
4. Build Self Confidence. Don`t care what people say! If you feel you look good, strut your stuff down the street like it’s a catwalk. This is a crucial step when dressing like a model. It’s important to know that you look and feel good in what you are wearing, whether it’s high-end fashion or a bargain bin find. Hey, if you look good, you look good!

5. What About Make-up? The purpose of make-up isn’t to “cover-up” your beauty, it is to enhance your beauty. To “look like a model”, you don’t have to wear a ton of make-up. Washing your face regularly helps more than anything. If you have a lot of acne, even with make-up, there’s not a lot you can do. A little concealer helps if you have a blemish or two, some light blush and some mascara on the top lashes usually gives you a clean, natural look. Eye shadow is always pretty too, but extremes colors like blue, green, and black are only good for parties, night events, etc. Also, some light pink or peach lip gloss always helps, but it’s best if you blot it with a tissue. Shiny is okay, but pasty and sticky isn’t attractive.
6. Hello Gorgeous! Hold your head up high and be fierce. Smile at random people and strut. Wear trendy yet comfortable clothes, your jewelry must always shine too. People will take notice of your hot style in no time.
Tips:
- If you feel that none of the magazine styles are working for you, experiment! Get different clothes and accessories, and see what looks best on YOU. As long as you feel happy and confident about the way you look, you can look better than a model. (And at least you’ll look real).
Remember you can always customize your clothes or get a professional to turn them into something completely different.- Remember that fashion models (runway and catwalk ones especially) are often very thin. Don’t do anything too drastic to look like them – being healthy is the key to looking good. TOO skinny isn’t pretty. No matter what body type, being healthy and confident is as BEAUTIFUL as it gets.
- If you know how to sew, you can even make your own dresses or clothes you find in Fashion Magazines.
- Ask your close family members/friends to give you their honest opinion on how you look. There’s always time to improve your fashion style and get it spot on!
Must-Haves:
- RM $$$
- Good Idea of what you WANT.
- Shop/Store Knowledge. You gotta know where’s the good stores to shop your stuff because you don’t want your clothes to fall apart after just a few times wearing it.
- Fashion magazines (as many as you need)
Don’t just daydream about dressing like a model. Now, with the tips given, start electrifying everyone with your fashion style. Be bold, be daring, be creative and stay real. You go girl!

Dear Kay,
Thank you for your prompt reply & valuable information. I really appreciate it a lot!
Indeed it gave me the direction of what i should be doing in my case, thanks again. I’ll check with them on the talent briefing.
Thanks for your well wishes too!
Warmest rgds,
Linda E.
Dear Linda,
Well, first thing to bear in mind is that you have to dress for the part. Casting isn’t a job interview. But the wardrobe brief is depending on the casting scenes itself.
Talent brief is given for a reason. Ask your agent/agency that sent you in for the casting, about the wardrobe brief. Then, you will have a better feel of what they are looking for. Common outfits are casual, smart casual, office wear and sports wear. Be clear of what outfit you need to wear for the casting.
Accessories and make-up should also be in minimal. If you wear too much accessories, you will be asked to remove them during the casting. Make-up also should stay natural and not over the top. Clients like to see how good you look without heaps of make-up on your face.
Hope this info is helpful.
Keep trying out for more castings. The more you attend, the better you’ll get.
All the best Linda.
Regards,

Dear Kay,
To me a casting is like a job interview, however a typical job interview expects a formal outfit, stritly no jeans & eccentric accessories.
So my question which I hope you can help me is, what do are we suppose to wear when attending a casting? Formal, semi formal? Casual smart? Or something outstanding?
What are the things we should steer away…? Suits?
Thank you/Linda E.
