Amidst all the endless discussions, one thing is clear: People want to see models they can relate to, that show them a realistic and more inclusive ideal of what beauty looks like. While super-skinny models are easy for super-skinny women to relate to, models representing other body types are few and far between, leaving women who don’t fit the super-skinny mold feeling frustrated and excluded.

Fortunately, the girls featured above, which the industry labels as “plus size,” are getting more jobs and more exposure with each passing day, giving us hope that the standards of beauty are beginning to shift and widen. However, much of their work is still in catalogs or other less-publicized mediums, or if featured somewhere in the high-fashion world, the spreads lean towards sensationalism. We certainly still have a long way to go.

Here, we’ll take a look at three girls that are spearheading this movement towards the celebration of all body types. Crystal Renn, Marquita Pring, and Barbara Bickner are among the top plus size models working today, and are certainly worth knowing about.

Crystal Renn

Probably the most well known plus size model right now, Crystal Renn can be seen gracing top magazine covers, catwalks and advertisements alike.

Renn wasn’t always working as a plus size model, though: When she first started modeling, she struggled with various eating disorders to maintain her size-zero figure. Since overcoming those disorders, she has been featured in numerous articles and has spoken in many interviews about her experiences trying to mold herself into what designers and editors claimed was beautiful.

But before you assume Crystal’s story ends there, or perhaps that her story is what propelled her to fame, take another look. With her thick dark hair and bold brown eyes, the girl is simply breathtaking. Her most recent work includes Jimmy Choo’s bright and eye-catching spring ads, a spot in the swimsuit section of J. Crew’s newest catalog, and an editorial in Vogue Germany. With so many accomplishments under her belt already, it’s clear that Crystal is one to watch.

Marquita Pring

She may be just out of her teens, but she’s no newcomer to the fashion world – Marquita Pring had been modeling for around five years when she had her breakout moment thanks to V Magazine’s plus size issue in 2010.

Even alongside a handful of other gorgeous girls in the issue, Marquita was hard to keep your eyes off of, with her strong stance and subtly seductive stare. And the world hasn’t stopped watching her since – Marquita has appeared everywhere from the Jean Paul Gaultier runway (whose shows are becoming increasingly more inclusive) to Bloomingdale’s catalog. I’m sure we’ll see her featured in even more places as the years go by.

Barbara Brickner

Practically a fashion veteran, Barbara Brickner has been modeling for over ten years. She is currently represented by agencies all over the world and regularly appears in international magazines and campaigns.

This Seattle native has been dubbed the “Cindy Crawford of Plus Size Models” thanks to her natural beauty and, accordingly, versatility. Barbara can be seen in catalogs for Nordstrom and Macy’s, among others, and was notably the first plus size model to grace a billboard in Times Square, which was for her consistent client Liz Claiborne.

It truly doesn’t matter what size you are. When you’re confident and comfortable with yourself, your beauty shines through. Well, just look at these lovely ladies!

Here, we’ll show you how to emulate their enviable looks.

Hilary Rhoda – Eyebrows

Hilary Rhoda is an all-American beauty hailing from Maryland and has been working as a model since 2005 when she signed with IMG. She is currently working with Women Management, and some of her latest campaigns have been with Jones New York and Estee Lauder. The most noteworthy aspect of Hilary’s look is definitely her amazing eyebrows. Thick and shapely, Hilary’s brows frame her face perfectly.

Technique

Getting your eyebrows to naturally look like Hilary’s may take some time, especially if you’ve plucked your brows to look a bit thinner. If that’s the case, you can let your brows grow out to get a look more like Hilary’s. However, while they grow, it’s important to keep shaping your brows, plucking hairs that stray way too far out of your desired outline. And don’t be afraid to let a few hairs that you aren’t used to come through – eventually they’ll work into a fuller brow, which is clearly the goal.

Until your brows grow, fake it ’til you make it with this makeup trick. First, eyebrow pencil is crucial to achieve Hilary’s look.  These little pencils are perfect for achieving a natural looking yet more defined brow, but can be a little tough to use properly.  Be sure to pick out a color that’s a shade or two lighter than your natural eyebrow color, then use small strokes to fill in between hairs.  Afterwards, use a an eyebrow brush to blend the color.  This last step is of the utmost importance, without it, you can be left looking like an art project gone wrong– not the look you’re going for.

Isabeli Fontana – Eyes

Though her name might not be a household one yet, Isabeli Fontana has been making waves with her Brazilian-bombshell look since she was 16.  She caused a stir that year by appearing in the Victoria’s Secret catalog. With that publicity, she caught the attention of numerous high-fashion editors and photographers that she has been working with ever since. Under Women Management, her most recent projects have included working as the face of both Dolce and Gabanna and +J Jil Sander for Uniqlo.

Out of everything that makes Isabeli so stunning, her eyes are definitely the feature that brings in the most focus. Isabeli and her makeup artists love to play up her eyes, and below, I’ll show you how to bring a similar amount of focus to yours.

Technique

To replicate Isabeli’s look, you’ll simply need a light concealer or an eyeshadow primer, black mascara, eyeliner (preferably liquid), and shadow, as well as a little sparkle – you can try a shimmery shadow or a glitter liner, depending on the amount of glitz you want.

Start by applying the concealer or eyeshadow primer to your eyelids – this will work to keep the eye makeup in place for an extended period of time. Next, lightly line the bottom and top of your eyes. You don’t want to create a thick line, though – instead, work the point of the eyeliner between your lashes right at the lash line. This technique will make your lashes look extra lush.

Now it’s time for the eye shadow. As seen in the close-up shot of Isabeli’s eyes above, the eye shadow shouldn’t cover the entire lid. You should use an eye shadow brush and your finger to blend the shadow on the upper part of the lid, making sure the shadow gets darker towards the inner corner of your eye.

Mascara comes next and is a key component of achieving an intense eye look. Use the mascara on both the top and bottom eyelashes to ensure a dramatic finish. Lastly, add a touch of sparkle on the inner corners of your eyes – not only does sparkle add a little fun to the look, but it will also catch the light, making your eyes look wider.

These are just simple make-up tricks to play with. By switching the way you do up your eye brows and gorgeous eyes will make a huge difference in your appearance.

Each model always encounters their first experience in modeling. Tell us about your first modeling gig.
My first modeling job was being a hairshow model for ACUTABOVE academy and it’s actually for a student graduation show. Initially, I just wanted to help out my friend (because he requested me to be his model). But later on, I realized that I have this huge interest for this field. I was a little nervous because I’m still a newbie back then, and I did not know what to do during catwalk, plus I’m there with Miss Malaysia. So, you know, when being with the professional, the nerves intensify, but I manage to pull it off, eventually.

So, you stumbled into modeling as a kind favour to a friend. What happened next?
I decided then, after various photo shoots and the hair shows that I want to be in the modeling industry.

There are a lot of different jobs in modeling. There’s glamour, fashion, commercial and such. What jobs are you comfortable with and what’s your big no-no?
Normally I’ll do some photo shoots and freelance jobs. I make choices by weighing its pros and cons, like how it can help me or affect my future, or how compatible it is with my own principles. I absolutely will not accept jobs that requires me to model nude or any hanky panky jobs.

What were your family and boyfriend’s take on you modeling?
They have been really supportive towards my participation in this industry. However, at first, they did get a little afraid that i might get conned by ”agents”. Especially wondering ”What will happen during the photoshoot?”. Eventually, after time, they realize that these were all decent jobs, they got comfortable with it. Their only advice now is to not forget myself and get carried away with the fame and money.

We’ve heard stories about the dangerous sides of modeling (The encounters with strangers, fake job openings, etc). Share with us your way of dealing with this.
It’s important that I’ll ask for more information, like company details and what kind of jobs they normally handle. If possible, get their contacts or website, and then do some research before taking up the job. This is to ensure your safety because sometimes, they might just con us (the models).

You must have a favourite modeling gig, what is it?
I find catwalk pretty exciting but due to my height limitation, I don’t get this type of job often. And I also have a thing for high fashion shoots!

Have you ever considered how long you’ll be modeling for?
Hmm, maybe a few more years before I hit mid 20s. I don’t really set the timeline. But I hope to do modeling as long as possible! It’s a part of my life now. However, I don’t plan to model as my long-time career.

You’ve done a number of sexy shoots (in lingerie) and even modeled for car show events. The attention must be mind-blowing! Have anyone tried to be funny to grab your attention?
Yes, especially during car and motor show, when people would want to take pictures with you but instead of purely taking picture, they got a little too “friendly” and hug your waist or something like that. I find this is very uncomfortable.

Share with us your most interesting experience you’ve encountered in modeling.
It was during the video recording for Sensuala Calendar Girl where i have to eat sushi in a really seductive way (watch the video here). But here’s the thing, I’ve never see myself as a sultry or sexy kinda person, so it was kinda funny when i have to act seductive in front of the camera. It was so awkward and i even dropped my sushi! (laughs) I guess that will be the first and last time of me doing such act! Haha!

If you could turn back time and done something that you regret not doing? What would it be?
If I could turn back time, I would want to continue in participating in a BIG pageant which I was selected as finalist, but unable to attend the final due to busy college schedules. Who knows how it might change my life or career?

Anything special you learnt from modeling that might surprise people?
I guess it’s the perception of people that being a model is always easy. All you have to do is just look pretty, pose, and you’ll get the job or money. But that is not always the case. Being a model is something that requires a lot of ”out of the box” thinking and uniqueness. This is because there are so many aspiring models out there, that agent and clients now have more options. So, they might choose another model over you. It is important on how you carry yourself in the public or during interviews, because the slightest mistakes u make might degrade your reputation. Besides, before I started modeling, i always heard from people how bitchy models can be, and that you can never get true friend here, but it’s the opposite for me. I’ve met really nice models and client even. They are really nice and not as scary as what people claimed.

Who do you look up to in this industry and why?
Definitely Tyra Banks. She has always been my idol, I respect her not just because she is a successful model, but as a person, she is down to earth. There’s something about her that makes you feel close to her (laughs). There’s this one time when I watched True Hollywood Story on Tyra, that got me so amazed with how much she struggled in the beginning before achieving the supermodel status. She was so determined to get what she wants, regardless of what people said about her (that she is a little “meatier” compared to size zero models, and her wide forehead makes it even more impossible to be a supermodel). Not only did she got through it all with such amazing triumph, most importantly, she proves to us, models doesn’t have to be skinny, because there is something more about model besides just taking beautiful pictures.
